Farrer Park MRT and the North East Line

Farrer Park is the eighth station on the North East Line, sitting between Little India and Boon Keng on the stretch that runs up Serangoon Road out of the city. It opened in June 2003 when the line began service, and it is the piece of infrastructure that changed this part of District 8 more than anything else in the last thirty years.

What the North East Line Connects

The line runs from HarbourFront in the south-west to Punggol in the north-east, and it was Singapore’s first fully automated heavy rail line. From Farrer Park, the southbound stretch is the useful one for most commuters: Little India at one stop, Dhoby Ghaut at two, Clarke Quay at three, Chinatown at four, Outram Park at five and HarbourFront at eight.

Northbound, Boon Keng is one stop, Potong Pasir two, Woodleigh three and Serangoon four. Serangoon is where the line meets the Circle Line, which is the practical route toward Bishan, Paya Lebar and the eastern arc.

The Interchanges That Matter

Two interchanges do most of the work. Dhoby Ghaut, two stops south, is a triple interchange with the North South and Circle lines — the North South Line puts Orchard one stop further on and Marina Bay a short run in the other direction. Little India, one stop north, connects to the Downtown Line, which reaches Bugis, Promenade and Bayfront without going through Dhoby Ghaut at all.

Having two different interchanges within one and two stops respectively is worth more than a single interchange at the station itself, because it gives you a route round a service disruption on either line.

Above the Station

City Square Mall sits directly beside the station, which makes the supermarket and cinema run an extension of the commute rather than a separate trip. Mustafa Centre is a short walk down Syed Alwi Road, and Farrer Park Hospital and Farrer Park Medical Centre — Connexion — are within a few minutes on foot.

The station also sits at the edge of Little India, which means the Serangoon Road food and retail corridor starts effectively at the platform exit and runs south from there.

What It Means for the Surrounding Streets

Dorset Road, Owen Road, Kent Road and the surrounding grid sit within a four to eight minute walk of the station entrance depending which end you start from. That band is where the station’s effect on property values concentrates: close enough that the walk stays a walk in bad weather, far enough that you are not living above a transport interchange.

It is also why so little land in this pocket changes hands. The streets are a settled mix of HDB blocks, low-rise conservation housing and shophouses, and a new private residential site inside that radius is a rare event — which is the context for the nine-bid tender covered on our pricing page.

Practical Notes

Farrer Park is a relatively shallow station by North East Line standards, so platform-to-street time is short. Peak-hour loading southbound toward Dhoby Ghaut is the heaviest part of the day; northbound toward Serangoon is noticeably easier. Bus services along Serangoon Road and Rangoon Road cover the gaps, and the nearest stop to Dorset Road is about 130 metres away.
